Current Status of Environmental Accounting in Japan

ECP Newsletter 2000-6 JEMAI “Environmental accounting” is now attracting the attention of Japanese industry. In the past, environmental audit, eco-labeling, EPE, LCA and other techniques have been developed to support environmental management by enterprises. Eco-materials and eco-design focusing on environmental harmony of raw materials, materials and products have been developed and are used. Ecofunds paying attention to investors and green purchase paying attention to consumers have been fostered. As a new environmental management technique that relates to techniques, tools, and social regimes and regulation to implement environmental management of all enterprises, that supports them financially from their foundations, and that economically backs up environmental protection, “environmental accounting” is attracting serious interest in and outside of Japan. This paper reports on the current status of the environmental accounting being introduced by Japanese companies and also studies its implementation in the future.
